World Championships of Youth Flag Football!!!
Last October the DAC Panthers from Queens, NY attended the NFL youth regional
qualifier for the New York Jets, the Panthers went on to win the 9-11 tournament and were
invited to Florida to take part in the NFL Tournament of Champions. Peabody's own 12-14
girls all-star team also won their division from the New York Giants qualifier and made the
trip to Florida (all expenses paid). The 10 boys from Queens went on to win the 9-11
Championship at the Wide World of Sports complex in Florida and will now be representing
the USA in Germany later this month. The World Championship of Youth Flag Football will
begin on August 22nd and run for 4 days with 10 countries taking part.
Head Coach Jimmy Gavalas is very proud of his team and the effort they have put into
preparation for the World Cup. However Jimmy had to make a very tough decision as in
international play there are only 6 on a roster. Team USA also has another barrier to
overcome in that the team is made up of 11 and 12 yr olds and they will be competing
against 12-14 yr olds, so once again the boys from Queens will be the underdogs.
We wish Team USA the best of luck at the Championships and hopefully they can bring
back the title to the USA. 8 teams from Peabody will be making the trip to the regional
qualifier this coming October competing in the 9-11 co-ed division, 12-14 boys division and
12-14 girls division. If any of the teams win their division they will receive an all expenses
paid trip to the National tournament of champions held at Disney world in Florida. If they go
on to win the Nationals maybe some of our own players from Peabody will be representing
the USA at next years World Championships!!!
