End of season review Fall '06!!!
Another season of Peabody Youth Flag Football is finally in the books. This past season of
Peabody youth flag football was the 6th season of the league since its inception in the
spring of 2004 and was the best season to date. 53 teams in 5 age categories played NFL
flag football every Saturday for 10 weeks, over 200 games were played in 138 hours of non
stop action. This year the NFL introduced 3 new age categories to the program, which were
the 5-6, 7-8 and 15-17 category. In past seasons the young
6 year olds going up against the older 8 year olds was a bit of a miss-match, this is not the
case any more with the new younger age categories. The new 15-17 group gives some of
the older players another chance to keep playing flag and also keeps high school football
players sharp in the off season.
This past season was the first time since the league started that not one game was
canceled due to the weather, each and every week the weather was great for playing
football as can been seen in some of the photos from each week during the season. The
one weekend that the weather was a factor, league play was on hold for the NFL regional
qualifier. The league sent a record 9 teams to the qualifier which was held in Roxbury, MA,
last October. Every team played very well on the day with all 9 teams finishing with a winning
record including the 9-11 girls all-star team that went up against 3 all boys teams. Teams
from CT, FL, NH, IN and all over MA entered the tournament for a chance to play in the
Tournament of Champions held at Disney’s Wide world of sports complex. In the end 2 of
the 9 teams made it to the play-offs but unfortunately neither of our teams won their division.
By the end of the season only 6 teams remained undefeated out of the 53 that started the
season and just 5 teams failed to record a victory, which is a testament to the rising
standard of play the league has witnessed over the past 6 seasons. In the 5-6 division not
one team was shut out all season, in the 7-8 division, the Championship game went into
overtime for the first time in league history, the Packers of the 9-11 division gave up just 50
points all season which is an average of just 1 TD a game, in the 12-14 division the
Dolphins scored a record 335 points in just 6 games and in the 15-17 division the average
number of points scored in a game was 85!!!!All in all it was a terrific season and every
team contributed in their own way to making this season the best season ever.
We would like to thank everyone that participated in the league this past fall and we hope to
see you all in the spring. On-line registration will begin from Jan 1st for the spring ‘07
season which is slated to begin at the end of March. Please note there will be no in-person
registrations this coming spring, the only way you can register for the league is on-line.
Have a great Christmas and see you in the new year!!!
