End of season review fall '05
Peabody residents are lucky in that there are a wide range of sports available to the kids
such as Basketball, Hockey, Soccer,
Lacrosse, Baseball etc, etc and if that weren't all enough we now have flag football!!!
Scheduling every season is a challenge within itself and this fall was no different, we
decided to go with the games in the afternoon instead of the morning in order to reduce
scheduling conflicts with other sports. The season was scheduled to start October 8th
however due to torrential rain on the 8th and the NFL youth qualifier on the 15th, week 1 of
the season didn't kick off until October 22nd.
Week 1 was it's usual hectic self with players and coaches trying to get a grasp of all the
rules and regulations along with the style of NFL flag, however this time around things
seamed more organized and the games/scheduling ran a little smoother. The thing that
stood out the most was the amount of people on the fields at Emerson park, there must
have been 600 players, parents and coaches and not a place to park for miles around, god
knows what the neighbors must have thought!!!
As the weeks went by in the league it was soon apparent which teams had played together
before and which teams were still trying to gel. Having said that there were many closely
contested games throughout the season and a lot of close calls. There were some good
games between undefeated teams during the season and at the other end of the table
some good games between winless teams trying to get a W on the board. In fact this season
30 games were decided by a TD or less.
The Fall '05 season saw both the most points ever scored in a season and the least amount
of points given up in a season and only in 13 games during the season did a team fail to
score. A total of 83 consecutive hours of football had been played at Emerson park this past
fall resulting in a massive 3820 points being scored, thats around 600 TD's during the
season. Amazing!!! Thats more TD passes, more TD runs, more safeties, more
interceptions and more flag pulls than in any other single season.
The Fall '05 season also had a record number of players in each age group and a record
number of girls in each age group. Due to the high number of teams in each age group the
AFC and NFC was created, funnily enough, this was an idea put forward by one of the kids
that played in the spring season. The fastest growing age group, the 9-11 division has
grown from 4 teams in the first season to 8 teams, then 12 teams, and last season 16
teams, following this trend we should see 20 teams next spring???
During the season the league took 4 teams to New York to play in the NFL youth flag
football qualifier, one of those teams won their division and received an all expenses paid
trip to Disney, Florida to participate in the NFL National tournament of champions, highlights
from those games will be aired on ESPN at 4:30pm Christmas day '05. Next season we look
to give more teams the chance to participate in this fabulous event. Watch this space!!!
This the 4th season of the league and only the second year has seen the league grow from
32 kids to 358 kids in as many as 36 teams. I would like to contribute the growth of the
league to the excellent youth program set up by the NFL, the principles of the league i.e
safety, fun, participation, sportsmanship. The inexpensive cost of participation, the small
amount of commitment required by both parents and players, the contribution of superb
fields by the city of Peabody, the coaching staff volunteering their time to coach and the
hard work and time dedicated by all those responsible for the league. A culmination of all
these aspects coming together to create something very special in our city.
On-line registration for the Spring season '06 will be available from Jan 1st '06 and in
person registration will be held at the Higgins middle school in Peabody on Saturday
mornings during Feb and early March. As with last spring the 6-8 age division games will be
played Tuesday's from 3:30pm - 5pm, the 9-11 age division games will be played on
Wednesday's at the same time and the 12-14 age division will play Thursday's also at the
same time.
Have a great Christmas and new year and hope to see you all in the spring.
