Coaches of the Season!!!
This past spring the league had over 50 registered coaches that volunteered their time to
coach NFL youth flag football. As always we had many returning coaches and some new
faces which helped the league run smoothly. Each year is a new challenge for the coaches
as every year is different in one way or another, sometimes the coaches have new players
on the team, sometimes the team is playing at a higher level and it is up to the coach to
make sure everyone plays and everyone learns and everyone has fun. Every season we
like to thank all the coaches for their hard work, they don't have the big contract, they don't
get interviewed on ESPN or NESN they don't even have a locker room, but they have
commitment and dedication for the kids and for that we should all be thankful. We would
especially like to congratulate the following coaches as they have been recognized as going
above and beyond, taking time of work and going out of their way for their team.
Jim Savego Tom Drozewski Brian Crawford Tim Hosman Jeff Chambers Greg Celentano

The 5-6 division is where the biggest transformation takes place from the start if the season
until the end of the season. Often in week one its not unusual to see kids running the wrong
way, dancing on the sidelines and not really know whats going on, but by the end of the
season you can see teams running the reverse, catching footballs and being involved in the
game. Mr Savego has just finished his second year of coaching in the league and this past
season his little Browns went all the way to the Superbowl and lost by 1 point. Mr Savego
has two boys that play on his team and each boy shares playing time with all the other kids
on the team regardless of the score. You often here a few of his players ask whats the
score and Jim just replies "it doesn't matter what the score is are you having fun?" Thats
what the 5-6 age group is all about, thats what the league is all about. Congratulations Jim,
we hope to see you again next Spring if not sooner.
It seems that a trend of tandem coaches in the 7-8 division is the way to go and this year is
no exception. This past spring season Mr Drozewski and Mr Crawford who both have boys
that play in the division coached back to back Spring Championship teams. Last year their
team "the Jets" went on to win the championship after winning only one game all season,
this year however the team started the season #1 in the table and never looked back as
they went undefeated and finished the perfect season with a Superbowl win. Both coaches
are very organized and have a system whereby each child knows when they are on the field
and where they need to be. Every player and parent on the team is happy to have Mr
Drozewski and Mr Crawford as their coaches and hope the team stays together for many
seasons to come.
The 9-11 division gets more and more interesting every season, this past spring there were
14 teams in the division and while the Falcons coached by Tim Hosman and Jeff Lubas only
finished third in their division, they put on an amazing run in the play-offs by beating the #2
and the #1 team to reach the Superbowl. The Falcons didn't win the big game in the end,
but you don't have to win the Superbowl to be named coach of the season. Both coaches
ensured that their players had a good time all year long, twice during the season games
had to be rescheduled, but the coaches went as far as to take time of work to come down to
the field and make sure their players had fun. As with a few other coaches in the league Mr
Hosman also coached the 5-6 division Colts putting in more time to the league for the
benefit of the kids.
In the always competitive 12-14 division, 10 teams played every Thursday for a chance of a
Championship. Some teams were getting together for the very first time and some teams
were seasoned veterans. Mr Chambers coached the Lions to a #1 offense and #1 defense
in the division, his team went on to win the division and just fell short in the final game.
Every coach has his own reasons for coaching but Mr Chambers is a coach that says he
coaches simply because he enjoys it. Win or loose he is always positive and looking at the
brighter side of things. This past season Mr Chambers also coached the new 15-17 division
and entered a team into the Gillette stadium tournament, his team was first to arrive at the
field and even help set up the fields ready for the first games. His team had a great time at
the tournament and are thankful that Mr Chambers is their coach.
In the relatively new 15-17 division coaching takes on a whole new meaning. While
coaching is difficult enough the older the kids get the less they think they need a coach and
when it comes to flag football its even more so. Well, even Tom Brady needs a coach to tell
him when he makes a mistake, Mr Celentano did a fantastic job coaching his first season of
flag football, he led his Falcons to an undefeated season and a Championship. Everyone of
his boys mainly made up of Peabody High Football players respected and listened to Mr
Celentano, he had his team well drilled and never let them get over confident. Mr Celentano
previously coached Peabody Pop Warner and transferred that basic football knowledge to
flag football, which was a recipe for success.
Thank you to all the coaches that sign up every season to help mold the little ones into
being good sports, and good people, without the coaches the league would not be possible
and we need to thank the coaches every opportunity we get. Every coach can be a positive
role model in a kids life and if flag football is that path, then we are all better for it.
If you are interested in being a coach for the up coming Fall '08 season please sign

Thank you.
