Coaches of the Season!!!
Its that time of year again when we like to say thank you to all the coaches in the league for
their outstanding efforts during the season. This past spring season there were over 50
coaches in the league and every single coach contributed to the success of the league
before, during and after their games. During the season the league receives many e-mails,
phone calls and comments about coaches from the parents and along with referee
recommendations and the league administrators observations the following 4 coaches have
been nominated for this seasons "Coach of the season". Each coach went above and
beyond and stood out in a positive light the entire season. Therefore we would like to
recognize the following coaches in each age division.
5-6 Redskins 7-8 Panthers 9-11 Panthers 12-14 Chiefs
Eric Ricci Al Muise Colleen McCarthy James McKeon
In only its second season the 5-6 age group coaches like Mr Ricci have made the division a
huge success and very enjoyable for both the players and their parents. Mr Ricci has just
finished coaching his 3rd season in the league and his first season in this age group as he
has an older son that also plays. He said that coaching this age group has been "the most
fun he has had coaching", and "its all about getting the kids in to play and to have fun"
Before every game Mr Ricci has his team sit in a circle and go over the game at hand,
every week his young players are very organized and everyone enjoys being a part of the
team. During the season the Redskins tied 2 games but did not loose one game on their
way to being crowned the 5-6 Champions of the Spring '07 season.
In the growing 7-8 division, 10 teams competed this past spring but it was the Panthers
coach Al Muise who would stand out among the rest. Al is also in his 3rd season coaching,
but what was special about this season? The past 2 seasons Al's coaching record has been
0-13 but this spring he finally turned it around and reached the divisional final and was one
play away from making it to the Superbowl. By the end of the season Al's Panthers finished
ranked #2 with the best offense in the division. The Panthers fantastic season finally came
to an end when they lost to the Packers 21-18 in the divisional final with seconds remaining.
Al's perseverance, never give up and don't make excuses attitude has carried him and his
teams a long way.
In the most popular 9-11 division Colleen McCarthy has been an inspiration to all coaches.
Colleens team finished the season ranked #4 overall out of 14 teams in the division. This
isn't Colleens first time coaching in the league and every season she brings new
enthusiasm and encouragement for the team. Coach Colleen can be found wearing her
Panthers baseball cap running up and down the sidelines encouraging her players to do
their best. Her boys have not been playing together that long but it is only a matter of time
before they are going deep in the play-offs and trying to make some noise of their own.
Mr McKeon has coached 6 out of the 7 seasons that the league has been running. He is
also the first ever coach to win the "Coach of the Season" award twice, his first time being
back in the fall of '04. Win or loose Mr McKeon always has the best attitude which is not
always easy in the very competitive 12-14 division. This season his team went undefeated
and in the end went on to win it all, making it his second Championship in the league. His
first in '04 with his daughter on the team and now in '07 with his son on the team. The
Chiefs also played in the "Football Festival" tournament on June 24th and beat both older
New York teams, showing that this team has a lot of great players and a real chance at the
NFL Regional qualifiers this coming October.
Thank you to all our coaches from past and present that help to make this league what it is.
Without these individuals giving up their time to coach the youth of Peabody this league
and others like it would not exist.
Coaching is very challenging no matter what sport that you coach and there are a lot of
things to take into consideration. Coaching flag football is about teaching the kids life
lessons while learning the basics of football. Hopefully all the kids that play flag football will
have a positive experience with the league and their coaches and continue to be a part of
sports for years to come.
If you are interested in being a coach for the up coming Fall '07 season please sign
yourself up on line and go to www.nflyouthfootball.com for youth coaching principles and
guidelines.
Thank you.
