Coaches of the Season!!!
Every season the league continues to grow and every season more and more coaches
volunteer their time to help the children have fun, be safe and play flag football. This past
fall season the league had more coaches than any other previous season, over 60 coaches
in fact. While every coach does an outstanding job during the season we have a few
coaches that we would like to recognize for their efforts and achievements. In each age
group there has been a coach that has earned the convented title "coach of the season"
and shall be enshrined in the PYFF coaches hall of fame.
Charles Borstel Jim Burke John Lepore Bill Hosman Domenic Luoni
5-6 Chiefs 7-8 Eagles 7-8 Eagles 9-11 Cowboys 12-14 Cowboys
In the youngest division where the 5-6 year olds play flag football, coaching is about more
than just scoring TD's and winning, its about learning the basics of football, from snapping a
ball to running and catching. Its about installing the fundamentals not just for football, but
life. Mr Borstel is one of a few first year coaches that has earned the right of coach of the
season as he is always the first person to demonstrate good sportsmanship. Charles
Borstel often takes a low profile during the game which allows the kids to be the center of
attention. Every coach has a different coaching style and they are all effective in their own
way, but Mr Borstels style seems to be particularly effective as his little chiefs finished the
season undefeated and went on to win the 5-6 Championship.
In the 7-8 division the game gets a little faster and the players speed and skills become a
little more evident. Mr. Jim Burke and Mr John Lepore have just finished coaching their
second season together and have a very nice system going. Last season the two coaches
got their team to the divisional championships and this season they took their eagles one
step further and not only reached the Superbowl, but won it and were crowned 7-8
Champions. The teams success is not the most important factor in the decision to give the
two coaches the award but more about how they encourage their players to try their
hardest and never give up. The parents place a lot of trust and confidence in the coaches
and that is why they are crowned "coaches of the season" for the 7-8 division.
The 9-11 division is the most exciting division in flag football, this past season 24 teams
battled it out week after week. In the 9-11 division the players are really beginning to
understand the concepts the coaches have been teaching them all along. Formations,
strategies, drills become an important part of the game and often sets teams apart,
however it is the fundamentals of the game that still hold strong and Coach Bill Hosman has
been able to grasp these fundamentals over three seasons of flag football. Bill has never
had a winning season in the league but continues to coach season after season teaching
and coaching his teams the principles of the league. You will never hear coach Bill raise his
voice or argue, you will never see him frustrated or angry, you will never hear a negative
comment or see a player put down and it translates through to his players. Just ask any
Cowboy in the 9-11 division who is their favorite coach and they will tell you. The Cowboys
only won one game all season but with the league format, they had a chance to play for a
Championship and won the 9-11 "C" division Superbowl.
In the very competitive 12-14 division its not very often that a first year coach leads his
team to a #1 ranking in the division, but thats exactly what happened to Mr Luoni. Coach
Luoni's son has been in the league for several seasons and while Mr Luoni would always
help out the other coaches when possible, this season he took the bull by the horns and
coached the Cowboys to a winning season only loosing one game. The Cowboys didn't go
all the way to the Superbowl this season after loosing by just one TD in the Divisional final,
but i have a feeling they could be up there again next season. Mr Luoni always helps his
players be good sports. After a game they shake hands and applaud good play by both
sides, his team treats officials with respect and always come out of a game smiling.
All coaches are role models for their kids even if they don't realize it. While imitating you,
your team won't even recognize the good lesson they’re learning. Thank you to all our
coaches from past and present that help to make this league what it is. Without these
individuals giving up their time to coach the youth of Peabody this league and others like it
would not exist.
Coaching is very challenging no matter what sport that you coach and there are a lot of
things to take into consideration. Coaching flag football is about teaching the kids life
lessons while learning the basics of football. Hopefully all the kids that play flag football will
have a positive experience with the league and their coaches and continue to be a part of
sports for years to come.
If you are interested in being a coach for the up coming Spring '08 season please sign

Thank you.
