Coaches of the Season!!!
What is a coach? According to Wikipedia a coach is "a person who directs the players
activities in the game". This is true of course but only in its simplest form. Coaches of
young children today do so much more than just direct the players. When i look at the
coaches in our league i don't just see coaches, i see mentors, teachers, trainers,
motivator's, counselor's, psychologists and role-models. Our coaches don't just direct the
players in the game, they organize information, make phone calls, hold practices, car pool,
treat the team to ice Cream and pizza and most importantly volunteer their own personal
time. Why do our coaches do these things? There is no big contract, no fame, or fortune,
so why? Coaches coach because they love the game and they love their kids.
Every season more and more coaches get involved with the program and this season was
no different ,with over 75 coaches in the league. Every coach does a great job during the
season but we would like to recognize 5 coaches from the Fall '06 season that stood out
among the rest. They are:
Tom Lane Charlie Palmer Tom Parsons Corey Green Dan Williams
5-6 Chiefs 7-8 Jets 9-11 Raiders 12-14 Packers 15-17 Cowboys
In the new 5-6 age category, first year coach Tom Lane coached his little players to a
championship. This is only the 3rd time in league history that a new coach has come in
and won a championship right off the bat. Tom's little Chiefs only lost one game all season
and finished with the best defensive record in the division. In the championship game the
Chiefs handed the
#1 Packers their first lost of the season as they were outright winners by a score of
34-20.Tom's Chiefs always had fun in their games and enjoyed playing flag football week
in, week out.
In the other new 7-8 category, the Jets, second year coach Charlie Palmer, coached his
little munckins to a winning season, finishing the season with the #1 offense and defense
in the division. The Jets made it to the divisional championship but were gunned down by
the Patriots 30-14. Nonetheless the Jets had a great season as Charlie made sure every
kid got equal playing time whether the team was winning or loosing.
In the ever popular 9-11 division, Tom Parsons in his 4th season coaching flag football led
his Raiders to an undefeated season and earned the Raiders the #1 seed entering the
play-offs. The Raiders also made it to the Divisional championship but were on the wrong
side of a 20-12 score, loosing out to the Colts. Tom always has a talented group of kids
and is one of the most requested coaches every season. Tom's demeanor every week is
one of respect and dignity which translates down to his players. He keeps everything in
perspective and realizes that flag football is played so his kids can have fun!!!
In the growing 12-14 division Corey Green has coached 3 seasons of flag football. Corey's
Packers finished the season 3-3 giving up the most points in the division, but went on a
run in the play-offs winning 3 games to get to the Championship game. The packers didn't
win the Championship but gave the #1 Dolphins a run for their money. Corey has coached
both in the 9-11 and 12-14 division over the past 2 years and has used his football
knowledge from when he was a standout player at Lynn Classical and through his semi-pro
team the Lynn Generals to help coach his kids to successful seasons. Corey doesn't have
any children in the league which makes his commitment and enthusiasm all the more
impressive.
Finally, in the new older 15-17 division, Dan Williams, in his second year coaching took his
#2 Cowboys to new heights as the Cowboys defeated the #1 Bengals 19-18 in the
Championship game to give Dan his first championship in the league. Taking the first step
is never easy and with a new division there were a lot of unknowns this time around for
Dan, but he adapted and made the most of the situation which resulted in a
Championship, not bad. Dan is already excited about next season with the possibility of
more teams in this new and electrifying division.
Thank you to all our coaches from past and present that help to make this league what it
is. Without these individuals giving up their time to coach the youth of Peabody this league
and others like it would not exist.
Remember coaching is an extremely important responsibility and a good coach always
places the best interests of a player before winning. Coaching youth sports is a difficult job
because parents expect professional results from people who are mostly volunteers. High
school, college and pro coaches start as assistants and work their way up through years of
intense professional training. The flag football experience will play a significant factor in
determining whether the players continue participating in football.
If you are interested in being a coach for the up coming Spring '07 season please sign
