Football coach is a positive role model!!!11/17/05
Having been involved in a number of different sports programms with my son, i must say
that while all have been beneficial, none has compared with the experience he is having in
flag football.
First of all and most importantly he has an amazing coach, Coach Bill!!! What makes
coach Bill an exceptional coach? His attitude towards and his respect for the children. I
often listen to his "coaching talk" and i am always impressed with the messages he sends
to the team. Often when a member asks what the score is, Bill responds,"are you having
fun? Then who cares what the score is" His team is undefeated. When he is huddled with
the team, i hear him say, "who didnt get a chance to make a play?" Then he sets up the
kids to ensure everyone is getting a chance at a succesfull play. When the kids make a
play weather successfull or not, you can hear coach Bill shouting "Good job. Nice try"
He builds the kids up with constant positive reienforcement. I have never heard him say
"next time dont do this" or "oh what did you do?" He never criticiezes the kids. He notices
each childs unique abilitiy and utilizes that in order to afford a more successfull outcome
for each team member. He rotates the kids so they have a chance to try out each position.
Recently i overheard him talking to the team about good sportsmanship and how it is more
important than scoring points. At the end of the last game as the teams were shaking
hands, i heard coach Bill say "take out your mouth guards so you can say good game to
the guys, let them hear you" WHile i realize there are plenty of coaches out there like Bill, i
have to say, he is most definately a role model. Along with the wonderful life lessons he is
learning from his coach, my son has gained so much in the way of self-esteem.
Flag football has added so much to our family's life as we enjoy it all together. We have
come to meet other wonderful parents, watch our children blossom, and enjoy the spirit of
the game while being outside whatever the weather Mother nature decides to deliver that
day. I would like to thank Mr Austin Bradshaw for putting together such a wonderful
program and for recruting a dedicated and organized team of volunteers who help run the
organization.
