Flag Football a big success in Peabody By Jean DePlacido
This spring, 270 youngsters competed in three different age
groups on 28 teams. The spring portion of the split-season (it
starts up again in September) is winding down, with champions
already crowned in both the 6-to-8 and 12-to-14 age divisions.
The 9-to-11 division titlists will be decided this week.
The Patriots won both the 6-8 and 12-14 championships this
week. The Patriots beat the Saints, 36-12 in the yonger division to
finish an unbeaten season, while the 12-to-14-year-old Patriots
also rolled, 56-30, over the Bears in the title game.
Bradshaw intends to take the two finalists in the older two
divisions to the Eastern Regionals, as well as a 12-14 year old
girls' all-star squad.
"All the leagues in the state have been e-mailing the (New
England) Patriots to try to get them to hold the Easterns at Gillette
Stadium (in Foxboro)," said Bradshaw, talking about the
NFL-sponsored sport that was started by the NFL in 1996 to
introduce youngsters to football at a young age and teach them
the basics. All players receive certificates of excellence and
trophies are given to finalists.
"That's what we're hoping for. But if it doesn't work out, our five
teams will head for Giants Stadium in October."
Bradshaw expects an announcement to be made by July or
August as to the location for the Regionals that will take place in
October. The Nationals are slated for Florida in November.
"We'll go to the Regionals wherever they decide to hold them,"
said Bradshaw, a native of England who is now a permanent
substitute teacher at the Higgins Middle School in Peabody. "It's
been a very good season. In spite of the rain, we managed to get
all our games in by doing some catch-up at the end of the season.
"I'm really excited about putting together a girls all-star unit this
time. We now have 20 girls playing, way more than we had when
we first started last year. And they're very good players."
